INTRODUCING NUTSHELL MODELS
Definition
Nutshell Models are simplified presentations of complex, vague or uncertain
matters. They
are designed to maximize comprehension by finding and using essential facts in a
simplified manner that is easy for the average person to understand.
Interaction
The Nutshell Model learning process includes lively interactions between
the audience and the instructor. These interactions often lead to
enhancement of the model's application during the learning process,
resulting in a dynamic, developmental learning system.
Motivation
Learners quickly see significant improvement in their comprehension of
the subject matter. This makes Nutshell Models great motivational tools.
These models are most effective at the beginning of the learning process
when the audience is concerned with the complexity, ambiguity, uncertainty and/or
quantity of the knowledge and skills to be acquired.
Inspiration
Audience response to Nutshell Models is often overwhelming. Responses
include phrases such as "I was inspired...", "I discovered...", "I realized
that things are simpler than they seem to be...".
Presentation
The Nutshell Model concept is not intended to replace the existing body of
knowledge on any given subject matter. It is meant to complement this
knowledge by stimulating curiosity and motivation to
learn, accelerated learning, accelerated experience, and extended retention of the acquired knowledge and skills.
Participation
Nutshell Models are provocative by nature; they often challenge the status quo.
The audience tends to react by challenging the model's accuracy. The resulting
exchange is used to increase audience participation and effect the
developmental learning process.
Simplification
Nutshell Models are typically simplified presentations to formulate powerful basic
concepts. They are not intended to cover all topics or special
cases regarding complex or vague subject matters.
